Dark Night of the Soul

(OctPoWriMo Prompt for October 1: Dark Night of the Soul)

“hello darkness, my old friend…” –simon and garfunkel

 tonight’s air
smells of autumn dying

dried cornhusks scuttle down the road
fading flowers, giving in, giving up

the gentle breeze
carries the smell of darkness

strangely comforting
unthreatening, sheltering

brightness of day
uncovering all

like an unwanted spotlight

all my blemishes
all my terrors

all my losses

as if I’m pulled onstage
with expectations

everyone watching
carrying their own density

feeding what they see
what they need

fears feeding fears

the darkness of night
like a weighted blanket

soothing prickly parts
holding down nightmares

I smell the earth
the aroma of things

dying toward winter

I close my eyes
into the cave-like hibernation

and welcome
distant resurrection
